Malpractice litigation will touch many good physicians during their careers — yet speaking about it openly still feels taboo. That silence leaves clinicians without essential knowledge or preparation, while fueling shame and isolation. Litigation stress can affect nearly every aspect of life, contributing to burnout, depression and anxiety, relationship strain, and behaviors that threaten both personal and professional well-being.

At MACM, we are committed to changing that trajectory. We are proud to introduce the Defense LEAP (Litigation Education and Performance) Program, created by emergency physician, litigation educator, and coach Dr. Gita Pensa. Defense LEAP helps prepare  clinicians with the mindset, knowledge, and performance skills they need from day one of a claim.

As the sole physician defendant in a $28-million demand case, which spanned twelve years and two lengthy jury trials, Dr. Pensa understands firsthand how destabilizing litigation can be. Having had no preparation in training, she suffered years of litigation stress. Eventually, she made a critical decision to immerse herself in legal process, performance science, and resilience strategies. She ultimately became a nationally recognized expert in litigation stress, a well-being and performance coach for clinician defendants, and the creator of the widely used podcast curriculum Doctors and Litigation: The L Word.

Defense LEAP translates that experience into a practical, physician-designed program that helps insured clinicians manage stress, understand the process, and partner effectively with defense counsel — fostering more prepared defendants and a stronger, more collaborative defense.
